Team Spotlight: Meet Lloyd, Plant Manager

With over 20 years of experience in the industry, Lloyd is a true local in Newhaven – you can even see his house from the plant. He leads a team of 13 operatives and wears three hats: one for the port, where raw aggregates arrive by ship; one for asphalt production; and a third for recycling, turning road planings into Recycled Asphalt Product (RAP).

Despite managing a fairly new team, Lloyd has created a strong sense of family and teamwork – something that matters to him both at work and at home, where he is a proud dad of four.

Outdoorsy, community-focused, and a firm believer in teamwork and creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, Lloyd is full of character. He has a reputation for being approachable, hardworking, and slightly mischievous (he pretends to be shy, but he’s not fooling anyone). Known for his great banter, he’s also an avid baker – his signature dish is an authentic Italian carbonara. When he’s not at the plant, you’ll find him kayak fishing with his family or tending to his school of tropical fish at home.

When it comes to recruiting new team members, Lloyd believes character comes first and skills second. He has played a key role in training people from all walks of life — including a former law professional and takes pride in helping them thrive. Among them is Demi, one of three plant supervisors who he says he’d be lost without.

Known for his heroic efforts in Health & Safety (he’s been formally commended for it), Lloyd continues to train staff on offloading shipborne aggregates and values multi-skilled operatives for the long-term success of the team. 

With a strong network of employees who support each other in all weathers, Lloyd has cultivated a workplace where professionalism and fun go hand in hand.

About the Plant and Location

The Newhaven Asphalt & Recycling Plant, located on the River Ouse, plays a key role in resurfacing local highways while reducing road deliveries by using its port access for materials. The team also gives back — supporting the RNLI, South Heighton Parish, Newhaven FC, and offering employment opportunities to East Sussex College students to explore careers in engineering and manufacturing.
