Careers in Construction Month - Apprenticeships and Opportunity
Author: Hannah Purnell, Learning and Development Talent Manager

FM Conway offers a large range of opportunities via apprenticeships to support the construction industry, from onsite positions, like manufacturing operatives, to in office roles, including in our commercial team. Apprenticeships are a great way to develop your skill set, prepare you for a career in the industry, and support a more diverse and inclusive environment.
My role involves supporting early career professionals through opportunities like apprenticeships and work experience, as well as providing upskilling opportunities to people at all stages of their careers at FM Conway. I work as part of our Learning and Development team and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to arrange apprenticeships and ensure the smooth running of the programmes. The team always aim to learn about candidates as the whole person rather than just their CVs, and in doing this we speak to individuals to help them to work out what the right path is for them.
I believe that apprenticeships are a great way to get into the construction industry, especially because of the opportunity to gain workplace experience whilst getting a nationally recognised qualification. Learning is at the heart of these apprenticeships and for many people the best way to retain what they are taught is to put it into practice, which is exactly what an apprenticeship with FM Conway allows you to do. Beyond learning and applying the new knowledge simultaneously, completing an apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to earn a salary combined with employee benefits and offers an alternate route to university which is not the right path for everyone.
At FM Conway, our apprenticeships go beyond the workplace as we offer a rewarding enrichment programme. All first- and second-year apprentices attend quarterly enrichment sessions at our head office in Sevenoaks, giving them an opportunity to socialise and build connections whilst they learn more about the working world through workshops on integral topics such as: career development, equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and brand development. These workshops are a great way to give apprentices an opportunity to learn more about their place within FM Conway while we focus on their ongoing development. Plus, new this year, we are hosting mini events on payroll and our employee benefits system to help apprentices understand the fundamentals of the workplace, including finance and corporate terminology.
To thrive as an apprentice at FM Conway you must have a keen willingness to learn displayed through your curiosity, eagerness to ask questions, and strong work ethic – turn up each day committed to your position. Construction as an industry is in a period of substantial growth and increased investment, which is why it is a great time to start building towards a career that will last. More and more pathways are appearing to enter and grow within the industry, and, at FM Conway, we are always striving to stay ahead of the learning and development curve.
