Apprentice Spotlight - Alanna

Author: Alanna, Street Lighting Apprentice

Meet Alanna, one of our Street Lighting Apprentices who is building her skills and confidence through hands on learning across our highways network.

Name: Alanna
Job Title: Street Lighting Apprentice
Apprenticeship: Level 2 Highway Electrical Maintenance and Installation Operative

1. What tasks and activities does your role typically involve?
On a daily basis, I’m usually out on site with my team carrying out maintenance and installation work on street lighting columns. This includes things like fault finding, replacing lanterns, checking electrical connections, and making sure lights are safe and working properly. Each week, I’ll also spend time learning on the job, completing college work, health and safety training, and supporting more experienced engineers to build up my skills and confidence.

2. What inspired you to choose an apprenticeship at FM Conway?
I wanted a hands-on career where I could earn while learning, and FM Conway stood out because of its strong reputation in highways and infrastructure. What really appealed to me was how seriously the company takes safety and equality on site, making it a supportive environment for everyone, including women working in the industry. The apprenticeship offers real site experience alongside recognised qualifications, and I liked that FM Conway actively invests in developing people, promotes respect and teamwork, and provides clear progression opportunities, regardless of gender.

3. What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned so far as an apprentice?
The most valuable thing I’ve learned so far is the importance of health and safety and doing the job properly the first time. Working on live roads and working with electrical equipment has taught me to stay focused, follow procedures, and take responsibility for my work. I’ve also gained confidence and learned how important teamwork, communication, and mutual respect are on site, especially in an industry where women are still underrepresented.

4. What excites you most about working in this industry?
What excites me most is knowing that the work we do makes a real difference to people’s everyday lives. Street lighting plays a big role in improving safety, especially at night, for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. It’s rewarding to be part of an industry where women are increasingly represented and supported, and to see the results of our work once everything is switched on and working properly.

5. What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for an apprenticeship?
I’d say go for it. This industry is becoming more inclusive, and there are real opportunities for women who are willing to learn and get stuck in. Be confident, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to start from the bottom - everyone does. A positive attitude, commitment, and willingness to learn, matter just as much as technical skills, and an apprenticeship is a great way to build a long-term, secure career.
