Building Skills Through Apprenticeships: Kaylee's Experience at FM Conway

Author: Kaylee, GIS Administrator Apprentice at FM Conway

What Does Your Role Typically Involve?
As a GIS administrator apprentice, my role involves carrying out daily checks on our inspection data across several contracts. This ensures the information we provide to our clients is accurate and up to date.

A big part of my role is supporting my colleagues with the external asset management software we use, whether that's resolving issues, answering questions, or collaborating with providers to improve the system and develop new features.

Why the Apprentice Route?
I realised that an apprenticeship would be the best fit for me personally while at school.

One of the main benefits is being able to earn while you learn, as well as gaining qualifications without taking on university debt.

More importantly, through my apprenticeship I have gained valuable experience, developed transferable skills, and built professional relationships in the workplace.

Applying what I learn to real situations, as well as working closely with experienced colleagues, has helped strengthen my knowledge of the industry and boosted my confidence. In addition, being in a professional environment has helped me develop key skills such as communication, teamwork, time management and problem solving.

What's the Most Valuable Thing You Have Learnt So Far as an Apprentice?
One of the most valuable things I have learnt is to always ask questions. Starting out can feel nerve-racking, especially as a young person, but I quickly realised how supportive everyone is.

At first, I was hesitant to speak up, but I’ve learnt that asking questions is the best way to build knowledge, especially when working with experienced colleagues. By talking to them and learning more about our operations, I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the drainage industry and my role within the business.

Why Choose FM Conway?
FM Conway offers a well-structured apprenticeship programme which supports apprentices throughout their journey. Starting alongside many other apprentices made the experience feel less daunting and helped me settle in more quickly. The programme includes regular enrichment events, offering apprentices time away from their roles to focus on personal development.
