Research and Development

FM Conway has a track record of forward-thinking investment in sustainable infrastructure and a commitment to continious improvement. As industry pioneers in recycling, we continue to implement and develop ground-breaking ideas and technologies that revolutionise the way we work, so that innovative solutions are always driving our business forward.
Our industry-leading facilities are the result of our continued investment in recycling; owning and operating state-of-the-art infrastructure which allows us to think carefully about how we recycle materials which are recovered from construction sites.
This strategy has been key to the success of our business model, and by sharing best practice and collaborating with our clients, we believe we can truly achieve our collective ambitions for a greener industry.

Our Approach - The Circular Economy

We’ve long been advocates for adopting a circular approach to materials and we use our cutting-edge facilities to demonstrate to clients the environmental and financial benefits of the circular economy.
We strongly believe a circular approach can help us cut highways construction waste, and that is why we think creatively about using and re-using materials from our projects. As a result, we’ve developed industry-leading facilities that recycle up to 98% of materials recovered from our construction sites, before reprocessing them in our technically advanced plants.
We also ensure that our work impacts the road network as little as possible. This includes major investments to allow us to import aggregates via our jetty at Conway Wharf Erith as well as our rail terminal at Theale. We also reduce road traffic movements by using our Bitumen storage facility at Gravesend, which is operational 24 hours a day, utilising off peak times to reduce road congestion.
Recycling is in our DNA and this approach is embedded throughout our business. All operatives, machine drivers, lorry drivers, and management teams are trained in understanding our recycling processes, how they fit into our work, and how we can efficiently use resources to reduce our carbon footprint, minimise lorry movements and promote environmental initiatives.
We all have a responsibility to protect our planet and our natural resources, and by pooling our knowledge and sharing our ideas across the industry, we will ultimately make our sector a more sustainable one.

Using our Circular Economy Model, we:

Divert 60,000 tonnes of construction waste from landfill every year by up-cycling highways arisings.

Recycled over 1 million tonnes of RAP in the last 6 years, which equates to a saving of 14,700 tonnes of CO2e.

Reduce virgin aggregate consumption in asphalt.

Challenge industry standards around the use of recycled materials and have laid surface a course containing 50% recycled material on the strategic road network.
