Sustainability

FM Conway combines sustainable innovation with a circular economy approach to materials use, to minimise the impact of our works on the world around us.

Our forward-thinking mindset allows us to work closely with clients and customers to support their own net zero goals, sharing best practice and our sustainability expertise to help them realise their ambitions.

Building a sustainable future for the infrastructure sector cannot be done in isolation, with clients, contractors and the supply chain working collaboratively towards common objectives. We’re proud to be at the cutting-edge of the development of the ideas and initiatives that will shape the world of tomorrow.

Our Sustainability Statement

We are committed to building on our long track record of sustainable development, to support and maintain the UK’s vital transport networks, built environment, and public realm.

FM Conway is focused on delivering world class solutions for our customers, and driving positive change to ensure that sustainability, and the health, safety, and wellbeing of our people, our communities, and our habitats remain central to all that we do.

We are leading the way for a better tomorrow.

Contributing to the UNSDGs

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) are the United Nations roadmap for a sustainable and prosperous future for all. The UNSDGs do not shape our approach, but much of our activity contributes to the achievement of the Goals.

FM Conway contributes to the majority of the 17 UNSDGs and has a specific focus on “good health and well-being”, “quality education”, “gender equality”, “industry, innovation and infrastructure”, “reduced inequalities”, “sustainable cities and construction”, “responsible consumption and production” and “climate action”.

1. No poverty

We provide stable employment opportunities, pay fair and competitive wages, and offer additional benefits to help employees and their families achieve financial security.

2. Zero hunger

We offer free, nutritious food and drink across FM Conway offices and operational sites, ensuring our people are fuelled and supported throughout the working day.

3. Good health and well-being

Through initiatives such as our Cycle to Work Scheme, on-site wellbeing events, and dedicated mental health support network, we promote the physical and mental wellbeing of our workforce.

4. Quality education

As proud members of the 5% Club, we are committed to having at least 5% of our workforce in earn-and-learn positions. Our Great Leaders Programme further develops the next generation of FM Conway leaders, empowering our people to reach their full potential.

5. Gender equality

We are committed to achieving 30% female representation across FM Conway by 2030, supported by inclusive recruitment practices, mentoring, and leadership development initiatives.

6. Clean water and sanitation

We ensure clean drinking water and proper sanitation facilities are available at our Head Office and across all operational sites, promoting health and hygiene for everyone.

7. Affordable and clean energy

We are proud to power all FM Conway offices and facilities with 100% renewable electricity, helping to reduce our operational carbon footprint.

8. Decent work and economic growth

Our sustainable procurement process ensures ethical sourcing and strong supplier relationships, supporting local economies and driving continuous improvement across our value chain.

9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

We continually invest in innovation — from developing low-carbon materials to enhancing our recycling and asphalt technologies — to build more sustainable, resilient infrastructure.

10. Reduced inequalities

Our Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Strategy ensures every employee feels valued, respected, and supported, regardless of background or identity.

11. Sustainable cities and communities

We actively invest in the communities where we work — supporting local charities, community groups, and events to help create safer, stronger, and more sustainable places to live and work.

12. Responsible consumption and production

We embed sustainability from the start of every project — prioritising resource efficiency, waste reduction, and biodiversity enhancements in our designs and operations.

13. Climate action

Our Net Zero Strategy outlines our roadmap to reduce carbon emissions across our operations and supply chain, with a target to achieve Net Zero by 2045.

14. Life below water

We clean over two million gullies each year, processing the waste at our state-of-the-art Treatment and Recovery Plant where the water is recycled and reused — helping to prevent pollution and protect waterways.

15. Life on land

We have a targeted Biodiversity Action Plan in place to enhance habitats and improve our Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) score across all our operations and projects.

16. Peace, justice and strong institutions

We operate with integrity and transparency through robust governance, anti-bribery and anti-money laundering policies, and employee awareness programmes that promote ethical behaviour.

17. Partnerships for the goals

We collaborate with industry leaders including Shell, Volvo, WSP, TfL, and Westminster City Council to drive innovation, share knowledge, and deliver sustainable outcomes.

18. Sustainable Development Goals

We are sustainabily transforming the built environment.
