A-one+ (Area 4) Structures Pre-Design Surveys

Description of Works
Following on from the successful delivery of Pre-Design Survey (PDS) schemes in the previous financial year, A-one+ commissioned FM Conway's Consultancy division to complete a further tranche of survey and options reports for structures expansion joints.

This involved:

  • Arranging site survey and testing works, utilising FM Conway’s Traffic Management and Lab teams
  • Analysing the results and compiling a report of the findings
  • Producing a Value Management report for A-One+ to use in the Value Management workshop with Highways England

Delivering Innovation

FM Conway’s Consultancy team delivered this project over the course of four months from being instructed, to commissioning surveys and compiling reports, through to producing Value Management reports to accurately satisfy the project needs.

The project required holistic asset management advice that was provided based on the survey findings. Rather than a straightforward full replacement of a structure expansion joint, a cost-effective solution to target and replace individual elements was discussed. This could then provide manufacturer with a cost saving on the works compared to utilising wholesale replacements.

To ensure that the project was completed to the specified timeframe for the client, careful liaison and strict deadlines were adhered to by the FM Conway Consultancy team.

Challenges and Solutions

To ensure that the project was completed to the specified timeframe for the client, careful liaison and strict deadlines were adhered to by the FM Conway Consultancy team. Evidence was required by A-one+ to progress the scheme to the construction phase by August and ensure a smooth transition from the design phase through to build.

To minimise the disruption the scheme would cause, the team pre-emptively booked road space on the Area 4 network to identify possible clashes with other schemes in advance of construction work commencing.

Where some structures were within close proximity to each other, the closures could be combined for 3No structures into one Traffic Management closure, allowing for a great saving in both time for the road users and cost for the client and project completion.

By asking for early preliminary results from the survey results, this meant that the reports could be better informed and meant the client could see an early draft to aid in the decision to agree to take the project forward.

Outcomes

The A-one+ Area 4 Structure Pre-Design Surveys project is an example of FM Conway’s ability to self-deliver utilising great collaboration, both in-house and externally, to ensure a high-level design was achieved.

By working with the Traffic Management and Lab teams, the resource requirements for Consultancy’s programme of works could be detailed and established early to maximise project efficiency, minimise the time needed on the network and reduce disruption to road users.

This also ensured costs to A-one+ were minimised and early and regular engagement with the client kept the project running on time though every stage of the works.
