Delivering Innovation

The aim of the scheme was to establish Queensway as a vibrant shopping and leisure destination with an environment that can be enjoyed by residents, businesses and visitors. Therefore, the team set out to remove the vehicle dominance that currently exists as part of a rat-run linking Bishops Bridge to Bayswater Road and increase the space available to pedestrians.

The scheme involved the extension of the existing footways and the renewal of the old tired surfacing with new Yorkstone paving, as well as the provision of at footway grade loading bays constructed from granite setts, which were to return to footway operation following the loading bays’ hours of service.

Challenges and Solutions

The scheme also involved the provision of granite sett entryways at key locations on Queensway and the narrowing of the carriageway to 4.8m to reduce instances of unauthorised waiting and loading activity. This proved particularly beneficial for social distancing measures that were enforced as part of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outcomes

As a result of our great collaboration, the Queensway area now features wider and less cluttered footways, a reduction in pedestrian congestion, as well as new high-quality paving materials throughout.

The area is now better equipped for parking and loading, and also features new greenery and upgraded street lighting, with all of these new elements combining to successfully enhance the Queensway public realm.
